It's nice to see you
"As a filmmaker who found his way into the art through a background in music, Wilfred is the best singular representation of a creative, energizing and driven composer in my mind."
- Ralph Parker III, director/writer (Sammy, Without Strings)
WHO AM I?
I am a Chinese-German-Canadian composer for screen and stage from Toronto, Canada. I’ve written music for numerous short films of wildly varying genres, including my award-winning score for Saudade, which was selected for the Cannes World Film Festival and the award-winning Sammy, Without Strings.
Nam Nguyen. After its debut at the University of Toronto Drama Festival, Pho was developed through the Paprika Festival and fu-GEN Theatre, and was the critically-acclaimed, sold-out smash hit of the 2022 Toronto Fringe Festival. Nam and I are currently developing Red Tide: A Macabre Maritime Misadventure, an original musical for Theatre Sheridan's 2023-24 season. In February-March 2023, I was part of The Musical Stage Company's NoteWorthy workshop.
I fell in love with music as a classical piano student at age 7. While studying Ethics, Society and Law at the University of Toronto, my drama geek friends got me involved with musical theatre. This was how my journey as a composer began, and when I realized that for me, true happiness lies in telling stories with music. I've never turned back. I obtained my Masters in Film Music Composition from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, under the guidance of Chris Heckman.
My stylistic versatility and keen understanding of emotional storytelling is what makes my music particularly special. I hope you enjoy what you see and hear, and don't hesitate to reach out if you're interested in working together, or you just want to say hello!
